Woodfire Body - Buff burning lightly grogged bodies formulated to flash during firing |
Although sculpture and raku can be done with traditional smooth bodies, we recommend that you use ones that have been designed for this purpose.
Grogged bodies have a lower drying shrinkage and the particles of grog help to terminate micro cracks when they start. While this prevents visible cracks, it also means that water left on the surface of ware has greater opportunity to penetrate in and begin a split that could cause a piece to collapse. Thus you may need to be mindful of not allowing water to sit on wet surfaces too long (especially on stretched or stressed surfaces).
