Zero3 Porcelain

Description

A fritted porcelain which we provide the recipe and support for (it is too expensive for us to make at this time but does have economies explained in detail on its recipe page). It is a real porcelain that fires at cone 03. Its strength rivals that of high temperatures. Its vibrancy and the colors you can make cannot be matched by any other body we make. You can find more information on its technical information page.

Zero3 fritware porcelain mugs at cone 03 with G2931K ultra clear glossy glaze. These were fired in less than 3 hours (start to extraction from kiln)!

Firing

Alert: This must be bisque fired much lower than other ware (around 1550F). If you bisque fire it at cone 04 it will vitrify and have no porosity for glazing.

Click the link for the technical information page above to learn more about firing. Do it right the first time or you will be disappointed.

Glazing

Zero3 Porcelain, Zero3 base glaze with 10% inclusion stains and 2% zircopax added (the zircopax is needed to prevent micro-bubbles and surface dimples). The liner glaze is Zero3 K transparent.

G2931K clear with Cerdec 239416 yellow stain (left: 10%, right: 15% plus 3% zircopax). Notice the zircopax eliminates the bubbles that produce the orange-peel surface.

Thermal Expansion

We do not supply thermal expansion values. If a chart is supplied here, please view it only as a way to compare one body with another. Please note that, although you may calculate the thermal expansion of a glaze, this cannot be done for clay bodies since they do not melt. The best way to fit glazes to clay bodies is by testing, evaluation, adjustment and retesting. For example, if a glaze crazes, adjust its recipe to bring the expansion down, fire a glazed piece and thermal stress it (using an IWCT test, 300F into ice-water). If it still crazes, repeat the process.

Zero3 Porcelain mug fired at cone 03 in 3 hours. Notice how ultra-clear the Zero3 K glaze is over the underglazed areas. No micro-bubbles. It is applied in a very thin layer. By Tony Hansen.

Zero3 porcelain (fired to cone 03 also) on the left vs. P700 Grolleg porcelain fired at cone 10R on the right. Both are vitrified and very strong. Both are transparent glazed (using G2931K and G1947U). The Zero3 one is more translucent.
